Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
Children with special educational needs have learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for them to learn than most children of the same age. These children may need extra or different help from that given to other children of the same age. There are four broad categories of SEN:
- cognition and learning
- communication and interaction
- social, emotional and mental health
- physical and/or sensory
At Monks Coppenhall Academy, we aim to identify, at the earliest opportunity, barriers to learning and to ensure that every child experiences success in their learning and achieves the highest possible standard.
We are an inclusive school. Across all year groups, there is a wide range of strategies and resources that the teaching staff can use to include children who have special needs or disabilities. Throughout the school curriculum, some pupils with high levels of needs may follow a more tailored and personalised curriculum based on their individual needs.
Miss Fisher, the Academy and Day Nursery’s Special Educational Needs and Disability Co-ordinator (SENCo), is available to talk to you if you feel your child has any additional needs. As SENCo, Miss Fisher will work with you, the class teacher and your child to ensure that their needs are met, so that each child is able to achieve their potential and be the best that they can be. Sometimes, where it is felt to be of benefit, we will approach outside agencies such as the Educational Psychologist or Cheshire East Autism Team (CEAT) for further advice and support. Our aim is to work co-operatively to benefit each child.
Mrs L. Kelly is the SEND Governor.
