Phonics – Read, Write, Inc

What is Read, Write, Inc Phonics?

At Monks Coppenhall Academy, we follow Read, Write, Inc Phonics (RWI) to help give all our children the skills to become confident and fluent readers.

Read Write Inc Phonics is a daily approach to teaching Reading for children from Early Years, through KS1 and in to KS2 if necessary.  It gives children the skills they need to succeed in reading and enables them to become confident lifelong learners.

The scheme incorporates Phonics, along with reading, comprehension, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and handwriting through engaging partner work and practice.

Children are taught by reading experts in homogenous groups (mixed) across the Key Stages.  This enables us to ensure that your child is always working at the level appropriate for them and we are able to support them additionally, through interventions, if required.

How is it taught?

Children first, learn one way to read the 26 sounds of the alphabet and blend these sounds to make words with Fred Talk.

Then they learn to read the Special Friends (2/3/4/5 combinations of sounds that are put together to make a new sound) and blend them together to read words. They then progress to learning sounds that they already know but with alternative spelling patterns.

They experience success from the very beginning. Lively phonic books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics as children re-read the stories, their confidence and fluency increases.

Alien words are taught alongside the real words.  Alien words are words that make no sense but can be easily read as the children know the sounds. These are taught as they make up 50% of the score when the children take the Phonics Screening Check as directed by the Government in the Summer Term of Year 1.

How can I help my child?

Many parents wish to help their child at home as they learn to read and as a school we would like you to read with your child every night and sign their diary.

When children are learning to read and write, it is much easier to say the sounds in a ‘Pure’ way. In order for you to help your child pronounce them correctly, we recommend that you watch the 'Phoneme pronunciation guide’ videos in the link below.

There are also attached documents at the bottom of the RWI web page for handwriting support and further information.

We are committed to helping parents support their children at home and run parent workshops to inform and support.
