Science

The National Curriculum for Science states that:

Science has changed our lives and is vital for the world’s future prosperity and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science.  Through building up a body of foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.

Intent

At Monks Coppenhall Academy and Nursery, we aim to provide a highly motivational, whole-school approach to science to ensure children are engaged learners as they learn the answers, to the questions they have, about the world around us.

Science is planned for and taught by teaching staff in a way that ensures the clear progression of skills and the development of knowledge throughout the academy. There are plenty of opportunities for hands on learning through investigating and discovery. In this way, children are empowered to become the scientists of the future. They are taught about the world around us often using our outdoor space. Children are encouraged to investigate the diversity of life, climate and ecology in and around the grounds and on scientific visits.

All children are taught the skills and knowledge of science as outlined in the programme of study in the National Curriculum for Science. Pupils’ science development is further enhanced through visiting scientists, especially during Science Week, Science Club and whole school holiday projects. Science is not taught in isolation, clear links are made to other subjects such as Maths, English and PE. Children are made aware of which branch of science they are learning alongside the aspects of scientific enquiry they are doing.
