Music
‘Music is all around us. It is the soundtrack to our lives. Music connects us through people and places in our ever-changing world. It is creative, collaborative, celebratory and challenging. In our schools, music can bring communities together through the shared endeavour of whole-school singing, ensemble playing, experimenting with the creative process and, through the love of listening to friends and fellow pupils, performing. The sheer joy of music making can feed the soul of a school community, enriching each student while strengthening the shared bonds of support and trust which make a great school.’ Model Music Curriculum 2021
At Monks Coppenhall Academy and Nursery, we aim to provide a highly inspirational, whole-school approach to music to ensure continuity and clear progression of skills for all of our children and to inspire each child to reach their full potential in music whilst developing a lifelong love of the subject.
All children will be taught the skills and knowledge of music as outlined in the programme of study in the Model Music Curriculum 2021. Pupils’ musical development is further supported by the provisions as outlined by the National Plan for Music Education 2022.
Planning and teaching of curriculum music is delivered and supported by specialist teaching staff and further supported within the Academy through music-based classroom activities and singing, assemblies and performances. All children have a variety of opportunities to take part in musical experiences both in the Academy and the wider community. All children have the opportunity to learn transferable musicianship skills through their curriculum instrument projects.
Children have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular musical opportunities, including Key Stage 1 Music Club, Monks Coppenhall Academy Choir, Guitar Ensemble, School Band and World Percussion ensembles. Children in Years 3 to 6 are also offered additional peripatetic lessons organised by Music for Life and The Love Music Trust, to further develop their musical proficiency.
