Physical Education
“A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. ” National Curriculum, 2014.
At Monks Coppenhall Academy and Nursery, we aim to provide an engaging, and enjoyable whole-school approach to Physical Education. We provide a safe and inclusive environment across the Academy to inspire each child to enhance their skills and further their development within the subject.
Throughout the Academy, lessons are delivered every week by class teachers and specialised sports coaches that are structured around building the skills needed to play and enhance their participation. All pupils participate in a variety of sports over the year and progress from skills-based learning to game-based learning through our sessions, ensuring every child is able to succeed and be challenged.
At Monks Coppenhall Academy and Nursery we are always encouraging children to lead an active and healthy life style through their food choice, exercise and well-being. This is implemented through the Daily Mile and cross curricular links.
All children have the opportunity to take part in intra-house competitions where they compete together in their designated teams which is celebrated in assemblies at the end of each half term. The children take part in enrichment days throughout the year where they are exposed to different sports promoting a life-long love for sports. We offer many extra-curricular activities throughout the school year and participate in many competitions within the local Crewe and Nantwich cluster and across the Trust.
We work closely with ‘Ministry 4 Sport’ to deliver quality lessons to our students both in our school and nursery. Ministry 4 Sport are a local sports provider who are present in many local schools in our surrounding area. Their coaches have a vast amount of experience teaching primary school children in and out of an educational setting and are well equipped to deliver the best coaching they can. Mr Sutton and his team of coaches have been working with our school for over 12 months and we have seen a great improvement and development in the skills and engagement of our pupils. In the 2022/2023 academic year, the Ministry 4 Sport team have helped us in achieving first place in both the field and track Town Sports events.
We are extremely lucky at Monks Coppenhall Academy to have the space and equipment available to practise all of our sports and physical education. We have a very large field at the back of the school, a Multi Use Games Area and a long jump sand pit. We also have a state of the art outdoor gym area which pupils are able to use during the school day to increase activity and fitness. This outdoor gym area was very kindly funded and supported by ‘the National Lottery’.
