CURRICULUM

PE
Children are to arrive at school on their designated PE days wearing their full PE kit. PE will be taking place outdoors wherever possible, so the children should have clothing which is appropriate for the weather on that day. The outdoor PE kit includes black jogging bottoms and a plain, black or burgundy sweatshirt for over the T-shirt (not the school sweatshirt) and trainers. It is important to have a separate sweatshirt from the one they wear in class. All clothing should be clearly labelled with your child’s name. Long hair must be tied back and earrings removed (or covered with plasters).
SNACK
As we are a healthy school, we encourage all children to bring a named bottle into school filled only with water. This can be refilled throughout the day. We also encourage children to enjoy a healthy snack at breaktime (e.g. fruit, vegetable sticks, nuts etc.)
HOMEWORK
Reading
Being a fluent reader is a significant building block for academic success as reading is used across all subjects. Therefore, we ask that your child reads at least five times a week at home to develop their fluency. This can be from reading a book, or going onto MyOn and reading on there. Once a book has been read, an Accelerated Reader quiz should be completed on this to boost the children’s understanding of the book and their overall comprehension skills.
The class teacher will check your child’s diary every Monday and award them with an extra ‘Respect Point’ if they have read five times during the previous week. Please sign your child’s diary each time they read at home and record the name of the book and/or the page numbers they have read. If your child has read over the weekend, please indicate this in the diary.
All children, but particularly those in Reception and Key Stage One, benefit greatly from reading aloud to an adult. This provides opportunity for the adult to check the child’s understanding of the book and support with the technical aspects of reading, where necessary, such as decoding words.
Recall of Number Facts
Fluency and flexibility with number facts, including time tables, develops children’s confidence and frees up their working memory when solving more complex problems. For homework, we would like children to practise their recall of number facts using Times Table Rockstars (KS2).
At the end of each week, the class teacher will check that this has been completed and award with an extra ‘Respect Point’. If for any reason, your child has not been able to do their homework, please speak to the class teacher. Children in Key Stage Two who have not completed their Times Table Rockstars homework will catch up during part of their breaktime on a Friday. At least 1 SoundCheck on TTRS should be completed each week. Any questions regarding this, please contact class teachers.
If you feel your child needs further support in their number fact fluency, please support them to practice this on NumBots which is the same login as TT Rock Stars.
Key Stage Two Homework Summary
- Read at home for 20 minutes, five times a week. This can be a choice of book or on MyOn.
- Spend the equivalent of 50 minutes per week on Times Tables Rockstars. We would recommend that this is completed in five 10-minute sessions.
